Pulling Away by Shawn Lane

Blurb

Noah and Charlie grew up in the same neighborhood. They’d always been friends, though never close. When Charlie is left alone after the death of his family, however, Noah is the only friend that sticks around after Charlie practically becomes a hermit.
Determined to get through to Charlie, Noah invents a fake identity on the computer to talk with him. And while Charlie still keeps Noah at arm's length, he opens up to his new computer buddy.
Finally, Noah's dream comes true when his friendship with Charlie changes to include sex, but each time they are together, Charlie pulls away afterward. Every time Noah tries to get through to him, Charlie grows even more distant. Then Charlie tells Noah's disguised internet persona that he doesn't have a boyfriend, merely a neighbor with whom he has sex.
Crushed, and in order to protect himself from further heartache, Noah begins to live a life separate from Charlie. But Charlie realizes soon enough that he misses Noah in his life, that he must get past his grief and go after the man he has come to love.
But is it already too late?
Excerpt

...Charlie knew Sly Cat had a day job because he never came on until evening. But usually he showed up eventually. Not so tonight and Charlie felt the loss.
He could continue to be stupid and go to his empty bed with his hand, or he could walk across the street and tell Noah he changed his mind and wanted sex. He didn’t even need to get into his car. How difficult would it be?
Charlie tossed his now-empty soda can into the recycle bin and went to his hall closet to take out a windbreaker. Did Noah have condoms and lube? They’d always had sex at his house, so he didn’t know for sure. If Noah was into sex toys it was likely, but there was no point taking any chances. He walked to his bathroom, opened a cabinet and scooped up the supplies.
A short time later, when he stood in front of Noah’s house, he paused. The house looked dark, which was unusual for Noah. Charlie glanced at his watch. 8:30. Surely Noah wasn’t already in bed? He rang the bell.
Charlie heard footsteps approach, then Noah pulled back the front curtains and peered out the window.
“It’s just Charlie,” he called.
Charlie heard the lock being flung back, then the door opened. A toothbrush stuck out of Noah’s foaming mouth.
“Charlie?” Noah asked around the toothpaste.
“Yeah. Can I come in?” Without waiting for Noah to respond, Charlie pushed passed him and entered the house. “I thought maybe you’d gone to bed. It’s pretty dark in here for you.”
Noah stared at him, his hand frozen, clutching the toothbrush.
“Why don’t you go take care of that?” Charlie suggested with a grin.
The other man disappeared down the hall and Charlie glanced around the front hall. As usual, the house looked spotless. Noah was a near freakish housekeeper. Unlike himself.
Noah returned sans toothbrush, but he still looked perplexed.
“Listen, I changed my mind. Sorry about before. I guess I was a little grumpy. Is it too late?”
“For?”
Geez, Noah was going to make him spell it out?
Charlie held up the condoms and lube he’d been holding. “What do you suppose?”
“Oh.” Noah blinked behind his glasses, then grinned. “Oh.”
Charlie laughed. “Yeah. So, is it too late?”
Noah seized the condoms and lube and simply walked down the hallway. Charlie guessed that meant it was not too late. He pulled off his T-shirt as he followed Noah to the bedroom.
He watched Noah pull the quilt, blanket, and sheet off his sleigh bed in one swift motion. Charlie kicked off his deck shoes, all the while noticing Noah had tugged off his jeans. He licked his lips, waiting for Noah to remove his snowy white briefs. Noah made short work of it. Last, but quickly disposed of, was Noah’s shirt. Though it was true Noah wasn’t all rippled muscles, he had nicely defined pecs. Charlie’s mouth went dry.
Noah ripped open a condom package and glanced at Charlie. “Aren’t you going to finish undressing?”
Charlie nodded and removed the remainder of his clothes, a strange warmth filling him when he saw the clear admiration in Noah’s gaze. He stepped closer to Noah, reached out and took off the man’s glasses, then set them on a nearby nightstand. Noah really did have pretty eyes...

Blurb:

Paul Graham is content with his life. An up-and-coming lawyer, he has no time to dwell on the mazes, puzzles, and riddles he solves while asleep. He has no interest in dreams, or anything that might derail his career.

Until Kian shows up. Sensual, playful, he claims that Paul rescued him four years ago. Now he's determined to repay him with the one thing he knows best: sex laced with... magic.

Kian is unlike any man Paul has encountered. He won’t go away, for one. The fact that Paul doesn’t remember him doesn’t deter his mission of seduction in the least. But soon enough, Paul finds that this strange, carnal creature has the ability to melt his ice with a touch, to bring out a sweetness Paul didn’t even know he had.

As Kian becomes a part of his life, Paul finds himself more and more attached. Forgotten dreams, buried memories, and the dangerous obsession of another conspire to tear them apart. Is he strong enough to endure a trial by fire in order to keep them together?

Excerpt:

Even in those cold, dark corners hidden in dreams, this fire will burn forever.

Paul bolted upright in bed, his chest heaving. He curled forward, scrubbed at his face with his hands.

That dream...

He hadn’t had one like it in years. A woman’s voice, reciting the one riddle he’d never been able to solve. In his waking hours, he’d scoured libraries, the internet, books from his childhood. He’d never been able to find the answer. And he needed the answer.

Because it was his mother’s voice.

“Bad dream?”

His head shot up, and his eyes rounded when he saw the man sitting naked in a chair beside his bed, holding a ceramic mug as he hugged his knees to his chest. “Wh-Who...”

The man smiled. “Kian.”

The word sent sparks of heat flying through his body, and Paul’s mind flooded with memories of fiery caresses.

... this fire will burn forever.

Everything blurred together, and he squeezed his eyes shut in a futile effort to clear his head. “But you don’t look like...”

“I know. I did say I would gorge myself on you, Paul.”

Lifting his head, he took a second look.

Kian’s eyes. Kian’s smile. But his shoulders were broader, more rounded. His arms were swollen thicker with muscle, and so were his legs. Because of the way he sat, Paul couldn’t see all of his body. He had no doubt, though, that the rest of him was proportionately bigger.

“Why... How did that happen to you?” he asked, trying to ignore the scent of sex hanging in the air.

Kian’s feet slid to the floor, revealing wide, solid pecs and deeply carved abs. “I absorbed a great deal of energy last night. As you can see, I am quite... filled.”

He wasn’t sure he liked the change. It felt like he had a stranger in his bedroom.

Not that he’d known Kian all that well before.

“How long will this last?”

The blunt question seemed to surprise the other man. “A year, maybe more. It depends on how much I feed in the future.”

Frowning, Paul rubbed at his chest. He’d let some... thing feed on him. Now that the fire from last night had died, he had the common sense to be disturbed by the concept.

“How are you feeling, Paul? Drained?”

He shook his head. “No. I feel fine.”

Kian grinned broadly and held the mug out to him. “I made coffee.”

His gaze dipped to the white cup. “For me?”

With smooth, feline grace, the incubus rose to his feet and climbed onto the bed. “Especially for you.”

Paul fell back on his hands, eased himself away. He didn’t want to experience that touch again, not so soon.

Undaunted, Kian crawled forward, cup still in hand. When Paul hit the edge of the bed, he had no choice but to stop moving. He stared up at Kian’s big, naked body, and noticed another difference.

“What happened to your scars?” he asked softly.

He glanced briefly at himself. “They’ve healed. You’ve healed me, Paul.”

But... he hadn’t done anything. “How?”

His eyes shimmered. “The chains that held me prisoner were enchanted, and the scars they carved into my skin had a more lasting effect than would have been sustained from a normal injury. I’d have healed over time, with enough feedings, but you are...” His full lips curved upward. “...so potent. Your desire has done wondrous things to my body.”

Paul didn’t know how to respond to that. Right now, he felt awkward and a little scared, so he focused on preventing any further physical contact.

Kian pressed the mug into his hand and sat at his side. “Drink.”

No one had ever made him coffee in the morning before. Paul curled his fingers around the cup, took a careful sip.

And barely restrained himself from spitting it back into the mug.

“Well?” asked Kian, his face bright and eager. “Do you like it?”

Swallowing, Paul forced a smile. “It’s sweet. What’s in it?”

“Cream, sugar.” He edged closer. “I put a dollop of ice-cream in the bottom before pouring the coffee over it.”

“Ice-cream?” Paul turned his head. “I don’t have ice-cream in my freezer.”

“You certainly do not,” said Kian, confusion shaping his features. “Do you not like sweet things?”

He stared down at his coffee, filled with so much cream that it was almost white. “No, I guess I don’t. Not since... Not for a very long time.”

“How do you take your coffee, then?”

“Black, usually.” Trying not to imagine where he’d gotten the ice-cream, Paul raised the mug to his lips, took another small sip.

Kian shook his head, causing some of his copper locks to fall forward and frame his face. “If you do not like it, why do you continue to drink it?”

Paul couldn’t meet his gaze. “Because you made it for me. It seems like the right thing to do.”

Chuckling, he took the mug from his hand, placed it on the night-stand. “So strange, that the sweet man does not like sweet drinks.” Kian brought his face close. “Your peculiarities are bewitching.”

Realizing a kiss was coming, Paul scrambled backward, forgetting that he was already at the edge of the mattress.

Kian caught him before he hit the floor, brought him back to the bed. “I’ve got you.”

Having those strong arms around him made Paul suck in his breath.

“Skittish,” murmured Kian, nuzzling his neck. “I’ll ignite your fire, and you’ll lose your inhibitions once more.”

His cock jumped, and he grabbed Kian’s shoulders to push him away. The new size and hardness of his body shocked him, and his shove didn’t have nearly the strength it needed. “No...”

Kian touched the tip of his nose to Paul’s. “No?”

His eyes drifted closed. “Please.”

A purr rumbled out of the incubus just as lips grazed mouth. “That’s better.”

EXCERPT from TO BED A SPY

“Let me get this straight. You need food. You need help. What else would you like, Master?”

A slow grin spread across his face. “I’d like to get some sleep tonight, but I’m afraid to close my eyes for fear you’ll crack my skull with that wrench under your pillow. That is unless you sleep with me.”

Infuriated, Rae rolled from his grasp, off the far side of the bed, and stood glaring at him. He sat, unmoving, a smug look on his face as he shrugged his shoulders.

“Babe, you don’t know what you’re turning down.”

“You’re a conceited…egotistical…ass!”

“Don’t forget arrogant. Now, who’s cooking?”

Rae reined in her temper before it got her in any deeper. She rubbed the dull ache in her temples and decided that if feeding that man proved the fastest way to get rid of him, she’d give in and do it. Without a word, she turned and stepped toward the bedroom door. He had her in an instant, pulling her against his chest, holding her in a steel embrace. She glared up at him.

“You’re shooting daggers at me again, babe. Pretty eyes like yours should be all soft and misty when a man’s holding you. Like this.” His mouth came down on hers, boldly claiming rights she hadn’t ceded him. Rae forgot to be outraged. How could she be when her insides promptly turned to jelly and she had to be careful not to fall over in a heap? Her nipples tingled and peaked. It took all her self-control not to rub them while he watched.

His lips pressed to hers, his hand slid down her back and cupped her bottom, pulling her against him. Her pulse quickened as she realized his arousal grew with every second that ticked past. Thaddeus pulled away and looked down at her with eyes gone black and strange. Deep inside, her womb contracted, startling her with the unfamiliar sensation. He brushed his knuckles along her cheek in a gentle caress.

“What’s wrong, Rae?” he asked, his voice soft and tender, that of a man who for some unknown reason actually cared about what troubled her.

“I don’t know what you mean?” She really didn’t, other than his very uninvited presence in her apartment was wrong. She refused to let this man play on her emotions.

“Don’t you like to be kissed?”

She rubbed the bridge of her nose nervously and looked away. “It’s okay. I haven’t done a lot of it.”

“The men in this town are falling down on the job.” Thaddeus tipped her chin up, forcing her to look at him again. “I swear. I’m only going to kiss you right now. Just relax and enjoy it, Rae.”

Her heart fluttered. Oh, how she wanted to do just that! Kissing had been such a disappointment to her and in her heart, she knew it shouldn’t be. It seemed to her that every boy who had ever warmed up to her enough to kiss her just slobbered all over her face. The tingling that spread out from her nipples promised more from this man. The sensation promised a taste of what she’d read about in her treasured collection of romance novels that dated from a century and a half ago. She closed her eyes, pushed aside the fact that he was a fugitive, and hoped.

Thaddeus’ lips brushed hers, the barest whisper of a touch, so fleeting, she wondered if she’d only imagined it. She opened her eyes. Victory flickered in the dark depths of his intense gaze. His mouth came down on hers with bruising force, hot and full of demand that stripped her will to protest.

His clever tongue teased at her mouth while his strong arms tightened around her. She opened her lips to draw a breath and he boldly thrust his tongue past her teeth. Something within her, low down in her belly, shifted and coiled. Heat swept her from head to toe, raising gooseflesh in its wake. The thing inside her loosened and gave her the impetus to reach for him.

Perfect Man by Shawn Lane

Blurb:
Alex Nichols’ sister sets him up on a blind date with the perfect man, a man who has haunted his dreams for ten years. Craig Fontaine was his fantasy as far back as high school, but Craig did his best to humiliate him then over coming out. Now ten years later they both have successful careers and Craig claims to be gay. At first Alex is certain this is Craig’s version of a joke, but it soon becomes clear things have changed in ten years. Craig really is gay and hotter than ever. But Craig has a dark past that threatens their future and Alex may lose his perfect man before they have their chance at happily ever after.
Excerpt:
Craig had gone on about how great the dinner was which made Alex smile. He hadn’t stopped smiling, really, since his fantasy man had arrived. It worried him a little. He could easily see himself falling head over heels in love with Craig—again. Just like high school. Only if it ended just like his crush had ended in high school it would be much more painful.
Alex rose from the dining table and started clearing up the dishes.
“Oh, hey, wait, let me do that,” Craig said. He swiped up a stack of dishes and headed into the kitchen. Alex’s gaze followed him. His ass was perfect, just like the rest of him. He’d looked great in the suit last night but in the tight jeans…well…he made Alex’s mouth water.
“You’re a guest in my home, I should be cleaning up,” Alex protested. He went to take the dishes out of Craig’s hands but he neatly sidestepped and put them in the sink.
“Where’s your dishwasher?” Craig asked, glancing around, a puzzled look on his face.
“I’m right here,” Alex said with a laugh. “This place has been here for years. The previous owners never put one in and I thought about it when I first bought the place, but since there’s usually only me it seemed ridiculous.”
Craig threw him a glance like he couldn’t believe anyone would do the dishes by hand. Shrugging, he reached for the bottle of dish soap on the sink.
“Oh, no, you are not washing dishes.” Alex snatched the bottle out of his hand.
“Give me that. You cooked.” Craig pursued him across the kitchen and pinned him against a counter.
Alex held the bottle away out of his reach and opened his mouth to say something when Craig pressed against him. Thoughts of washing dishes flew out of his head. His gaze drifted to Craig’s lips.
Craig took the bottle of soap out of Alex’s hands and put it down. His sapphire-colored eyes grew darker, flared with awareness. He held Alex’s hands above his head, leaning into him.

SERIES OF M/M ROMANCES SET IN LAS VEGAS

I'M SORRY is the first in a series of m/m romances set in Last Vegas. All the stories will be set in or around the fictional Neapolitan Hotel.

I’M SORRY
By Christiane France
Publisher: Amber Quill Press/AmberAllure
http://www.amberquill.com/AmberAllure/ImSorry.html

Blurb:
Misinformation and misunderstandings drove Chad and Reese apart and shattered their dream of a new life together.
Ten years later, they meet again in Las Vegas, and try to figure out what went wrong. However, Reese tells a completely different story to the one Chad heard back in New York, and now he’s convinced what he heard was true and Reese is lying. Problem is, he still loves Reese, and Reese says he feels the same way. But can love overcome all the hurt and the pain and give them a second chance at happiness?

Excerpt:

This scene is when Chad and Reese met for the first time back in New York:

Reese sat down beside him, and from that moment on Chad felt as wired as a teenager going to the prom, secure in the knowledge that tonight was finally the night. Under cover of the table, their legs, hips and hands touched, and everything around Chad disappeared except the need to feel, to touch, and to make Reese his in every way possible. And from the look on Reese’s face, he knew Reese’s thoughts mirrored his own. They didn’t need to say a word or spell anything out, they both knew what they wanted just as they knew nothing on earth would stop it from happening.
As the speeches wound down and the chatter of the guests at the nearby tables increased from a murmur to a roar, Reese smoothed his hand firmly upward from Chad’s knee to his groin. Chad held his breath as Reese’s hand pressed hard against his aching cock, wondering what he had in mind. But then Reese murmured, “What say we adjourn this meeting to some place more private?”
The nearest place they were able to find was a dark, drab room in another hotel, a cheap, touristy place a few blocks away. But décor was the last thing on their minds. Before Chad had finished locking the door and putting on the safety chain, Reese had shucked his clothes and was on his knees on the bed, breathing hard, and saying for “For God’s sake, man. Hurry up. I’m dyin’ here.”
Within seconds, Chad’s tux and underwear was added to Reese’s things on the floor, and he joined Reese on the bed. With both of them on the edge of coming, they didn’t bother with the usual niceties such as foreplay or condoms. Chad lathered Reese’s hole with a handful of spit, refused to think about the dangers of riding bare back, and just grabbed hold of Reese’s penis as slammed into him like a runaway freight train.
The only memorable thing about their first time was that it was over almost before it began. But once their initial needs were satisfied, they both realized this was no one-time thing—that they’d probably never get enough of one another. They cuddled beneath the inadequate bedcovers for a while, just long enough to catch their breath, and then adjourned to the tiny shower cubicle that was barely big enough for one person, never mind two.
By the time they finished soaping each other’s bodies and rinsing off in the tepid water, they were both fully aroused again.
As Chad stretched out on the bed and pulled Reese down beside him, he said, “Unless you have somewhere you need to be, I’d like to take it slow and easy this time.”
“Sure, why not? Let’s make this a night to remember?”
There was something offhand and casual about the tone of Reese’s voice, and it made Chad feel uncertain about what was happening between them to the point where he seriously considered getting dressed and leaving. Maybe he’d misread Reese and this was just a spur of the moment thing after all.
He forced himself to ask the question. “There’s someone else in your life?”

For when that happens, an entirely new power is created—a power ready to protect and defend their home world.

At Long Last by Shawn Lane

The right wall of Preston Reynolds’s office vibrated and
shook the framed awards and diplomas hanging there. Loud
bass and percussion warbled from the direction of the room
next door.

Across from his desk sat a little old lady with perfectly
coiffed gray hair, twisting her gnarled hands and casting
glances at the moving wall. Biting her lip, Mrs. Windham
shifted in the chair.

Preston cleared his throat and attempted his best reassuring
smile. “Sorry about that, Mrs. Windham. Now, then, you
needn’t be concerned about your grandson. I’ll go and see him
in lockup this afternoon. Everything will be okay.”

She nodded. “I’ve been told Trask and Reynolds is the best
at what they do. My grandson is completely innocent, but
naturally our family is concerned. So many get railroaded by
the courts.”

“I’ll make sure he gets the best defense possible, Mrs.
Windham.”

The wall jumped with a particularly loud blast of bass.

Mrs. Windham’s startled gaze went once more toward the
room next door.

Preston stood and approached her chair, helping her up.
“I’ll be in touch as soon as I’ve been to see him. You can call
me anytime with that number on the card I gave you.”

Mrs. Windham allowed herself to be ushered out of his
office and down the hall to the reception area.

“Wendy, see that Mrs. Windham’s parking charges are
waived,” Preston said to the pretty, African American
receptionist.

“No problem, Mr. Reynolds.”

The double glass doors of the front office opened and
Preston’s law partner and best friend, Jack Trask, walked in.

The tall blond man dressed in a pinstriped navy suit similar to
his own smiled warmly at Mrs. Windham.

“Good Morning. Good morning, Preston, Wendy.”

Wendy murmured, “Good morning.” She cast her eyes
down at the parking ticket Mrs. Windham had handed to her,
but not before Preston noticed the sparkle in her dark eyes
when her gaze briefly met Jack’s.

“I’ll talk to you later, Mrs. Windham,” Preston said, then
walked toward his office. He took a few steps farther and
stood outside the closed door of the office blaring rock music.

“Hey, what’s up?” Jack came down the hall, removing his
suit jacket. “Something wrong?” He nodded to the closed
door.

“This is your brother’s first day and already he’s a pain in
the ass.”

“Yeah, I know it’s going to be an adjustment. Dad insisted
we give the kid a chance.”

Kenneth Trask was the third partner in the law firm, but he
was semi-retired now. He’d been the one to hire Scott, Jack’s
little brother, as a private investigator and accountant for the
firm. Preston had been somewhat surprised as Ken seemed to
feel his youngest son was something of a flake.

“You want me to talk to him?” Jack asked.

“No, I’ll handle it.” Preston reached for the door handle.

“Um, something going on between you and Wendy?”

“Why would you ask that?” Jack raised a blond brow.

“Office romances are never a good idea, Jack.”

“Duly noted, but nothing is going on.” Jack rolled his eyes
and headed for his own office.

Shrugging, Preston tapped on the door. After a few
moments of silence he figured it was unlikely Scott even heard
him. He pounded his fist.

“Yo.”

Preston supposed that was Scott’s version of “come in.”
He twisted the handle.

Scott Trask was flung across the desk in the room on his
stomach, his jean-clad ass sticking up, the tops of his cheeks
clearly visible. The white T-shirt he wore had bunched up
underneath him. His head was missing.

“What the hell?” Preston walked to the stereo on a small
table against the wall their offices shared and pushed the off
button. Silence at last.

Scott’s head shot up from the other side of the desk, by the
chair. His face was bright red and he held a box of paper clips
in his hand.

“Oh, hi, Pres.” Scott lifted himself on his two muscular
arms, then scooted down the desk, his ass prominently
displayed. His feet touched the ground and he turned to face
Preston.

“Mind telling me what you were doing?” Preston asked,
ignoring the way his mouth went dry at the display. He was
not going to analyze the absurd way he reacted to Scott. No
way.

Scott grinned. “I dropped a box of paper clips.”
