We stepped out into the night air and into the limo. Brock settled back in his seat and glared at me.
“Well? What did you see?”
“That woman is Eve Taylor. She looks different off the air, doesn’t she?”
His gaze locked onto mine. “Are you sure it was her?”
I nodded. “Positive. And she was interested in my employment with you. Are you out?”
He smiled, one of those confident, butter-wouldn’t-melt kind of smiles that fueled an urge to smack him. It also gave me the start of a hard-on and a delicious achy feeling in my balls.
“Out? You mean as in out for the rest of the evening?”
“No, sir. I do not.” The smile I gave him in return was as phony as a politician’s promise. “I mean o-u-t. As in out of the closet.”
He feigned surprise. “You think I’m gay?”
“You’re saying you’re not?”
He bared his teeth, then chuckled. “I’m not saying a thing.”
I relaxed into the cushiony softness of the limo’s upholstery. “Good. Then I suggest you keep it that way unless you want Ms. Taylor to start spreading her suspicions around via the airwaves and having your secret go viral.”
“You think she’d do that?”
“I’d say she’s just itching to do exactly that. All’s fair in politics and her brand of journalism.”
“Damn!” He gave a long, drawn-out sigh. “Guess this means I have to be a good boy until after the election.”
“You do if you want to win. I know times have changed and the majority of folks like to appear very broad-minded and forward-thinking. Just don’t let it fool you into being too open. If you do, at least half of them will do a complete one-eighty when they cast their vote.”
“Even though I’m always very discreet?”
“Won’t make any difference if she decides to bird-dog you. Reporters like her who go digging for dirt usually find it.”
“How about phone sex?”
If Brock had wanted to surprise me, he’d succeeded. “I suppose if that’s what you want, although you’d still need to be careful. The providers of those services promise complete privacy, but how safe are they really?
Once you place the call they have your phone number, the number you called, and a date stamp on file. And if the cops decided to check you out for whatever reason…”
“The whole world would know.” He sighed. “Don’t worry, Ryan, I realize the dangers of going that route, and lucky for me I don’t need to. I have a much better plan. One that I can guarantee will be one hundred and ten percent safe.”
“You have a friend with benefits, someone you can trust?”
“I sure do.”
